International Scientific Training in Japan: New Perspectives in Plant Protection Research

In June 2026, our doctoral student from the Department of Plant Protection, Dilara Bozdogan, completed a one-month research internship at the Faculty of Agriculture, Kindai University, Japan. During the internship, she participated in laboratory studies focusing on plant virology, molecular, and microbiological research, gaining valuable experience in advanced scientific techniques. She also contributed to educational activities by giving lectures on plant virology and laboratory practices to undergraduate and graduate students.
The research activities focused on the investigation of an important disease affecting African violet (Saintpaulia), an ornamental plant widely cultivated in Japan and associated with significant production losses. Molecular and microbiological analyses were conducted to characterize the disease, and the obtained data are planned to be published in an international peer-reviewed scientific journal. In addition, she received practical training in bioinformatics analysis methods, improving her skills in molecular data evaluation. The bioinformatics analyses of the obtained data will continue remotely after the completion of the internship.
During the internship, Dilara Bozdogan also visited the strawberry and rose greenhouses of Kindai University to observe modern cultivation systems in Japan. By participating in strawberry and rose harvesting activities, she gained practical insights into agricultural production processes. Beyond academic activities, she had the opportunity to experience Japanese culture and daily life closely. She expressed that she greatly enjoyed Japan and was deeply impressed by its culture and lifestyle.
This research internship provided valuable international experience in advanced laboratory techniques, molecular and microbiological research methods, and bioinformatics applications, contributing significantly to her doctoral studies and future scientific activities. Appreciation is extended to the university for supporting this opportunity and providing the chance to gain valuable international research experience.
