The primary mission of the department is teaching and scientific research in the field of livestock production. Instruction is provided at all levels of education – bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral studies. In total, the department ensures the delivery of more than 60 courses for the Faculty of Agrobiology, Food and Natural Resources as well as for other faculties of the Czech University of Life Sciences.
The main research directions focus on issues related to increasing the productivity of livestock and ensuring optimal housing conditions – both in terms of animal welfare and the possibilities available to farmers. This includes basic as well as applied research, carried out mainly within NAZV and TAČR projects, but also based on industry needs, such as PRV projects. Within the National Qualifications Framework, the department verifies professional qualifications in several fields.
The department has modern livestock and experimental facilities that enable professional scientific or semi-operational experiments in the area of livestock farming. In solving research tasks and providing student instruction, the department cooperates with numerous important institutions both in the Czech Republic and abroad. The department is also equipped with modern laboratories used for analyses in the areas of genetics, reproduction, and product quality in livestock.
